Early Years

Our Early Years Foundation Stage offers a comprehensive curriculum that will prepare your child for success in school and in life. Our facilities are outstanding and the school is located in a beautiful setting with spacious grounds and modern facilities.

Curriculum

In the Early Years, we provide each child with an individualised learning journey through a play-based, child-centred and fun learning approach whilst following the EYFS British Curriculum. Our high-quality, comprehensive curriculum provides children with the essential skills and knowledge they need to prepare for Year 1 and beyond. The curriculum is designed and adapted to promote child-initiated and active learning. The school also places a strong emphasis on holistic education, which means that it considers the child's physical, emotional, and social development as well as their academic development.

What do we teach?

The 3 Prime Areas are our initial focus because these areas are those most essential for a child’s healthy development and future learning. The 3 Prime Areas of Learning are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development + Swimming

At South View School, we explore the 3 Prime Areas of Learning in more specific areas such as: Literacy + Phonics, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts & Design + Music, Arabic Introduction (FS2 only) once per week.

How do we teach?

These are just a few of the ways that South View School can teach its students. By providing a variety of learning experiences, supporting students' individual needs, and using assessments to track progress, schools can help all students to reach their full potential.

Continuous Provision

South View School is a school that teaches its students in a variety of ways. The school's continuous provision is the learning environment that is available to children all day long. It is designed to be flexible and responsive to children's interests and needs. The provision typically includes a variety of activities, such as sand and water play, role-play, construction, art, and music. Children are free to choose the activities that they want to participate in, and they can move between activities as they please. This approach to learning allows children to explore their interests and develop their skills at their own pace.

Child-led Learning

Child-led learning is an approach to education that puts the child at the centre of the learning process. Children are encouraged to explore their interests and learn at their own pace. Teachers provide support and guidance, but they do not direct the learning. This approach to learning is based on the belief that children are naturally curious and eager to learn. When they are given the opportunity to explore their interests and learn at their own pace, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated.

The ratio of teachers to students in a classroom can have a significant impact on the quality of education. A lower student-teacher ratio allows teachers to provide more individual attention to students. This can be especially beneficial for students who are struggling or who need extra support. In addition, a lower student-teacher ratio can create a more positive and supportive learning environment.

Mix of adult-initiated and child-initiated learning

A mix of adult-initiated and child-initiated learning is the most effective way to teach children. Adult-initiated learning is when the teacher takes the lead in planning and leading an activity. Child-initiated learning is when the child takes the lead in choosing an activity and determining how they want to learn. A mix of both approaches allows children to experience different types of learning and to develop a range of skills

Home learning – Reading is Everything

Home learning is an important part of a child's education. Parents can support their children's learning by providing them with opportunities to read, write, and do math at home. They can also help their children with their homework and encourage them to ask questions. Research shows that reading is especially important, as it is the foundation for all other learning.

We use assessments to support planning and progress

Assessments are an important tool for teachers to use to track their students' progress and to plan future lessons. Teachers can use a variety of assessments, such as observation, quizzes, and tests, but most information is harvested from the teachers’ day-to-day interactions with the students. The information gathered is used by teachers to identify every student’s needs to provide them with the extra support, consolidation or challenge they need.

Inclusion support

Inclusion support is provided to students who have special educational needs. This support can include things like extra help from a teacher's aide, specialized instruction, or access to assistive technology. Inclusion support helps to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed in school.

EAL support

EAL support is provided to students who are learning English as an additional language. This support can include things like extra help from a teacher's aide, specialized instruction, or access to EAL resources. EAL support helps to ensure that all students can succeed in school, regardless of their language background.

Facilities

The classrooms are well-equipped and there are a variety of other spaces for learning, including a library, a music room, a drama studio, a swimming pool and an art room. The school also has a large outdoor play area with a variety of equipment and learning opportunities.

Wellbeing

The school also has a strong focus on well-being. The staff are committed to creating a happy and supportive environment where children can thrive. The school offers a variety of programs and activities to support children's social and emotional development.
